Nathan T. Vorhies

Nathan T. Vorhies, 94, of Topeka, died May 16, 2008 at the home of his daughter, Barbara Deghand.

 

He was born in Aberdeen, Washington on November 25, 1913 the son of David and Estella (Godfrey) Vorhies.

 

Nathan was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II.  He worked as a Maintenance Engineer for the Lansing Penitentiary for fifteen years retiring in 1976. 

 

He married Beata M. Richmeier on January 14, 1937 in St. Peter, Kansas.  She predeceased him on October 23, 2001.  He was also predeceased by a grandson Bernard Deghand and three great granddaughters.

 

Nathan was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #534, James W. Gibbons Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Bicentennial Post #225 of the American Legion at Ozawkie and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

 

He is survived by one son, Charles (Marilyn) Vorhies of Gladstone, Mo., and two daughters Barbara (Ray) Deghand of Topeka and Nathaleen Devore of Mayetta, eleven grandchildren and thirty-four great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

 

Mr. Vorhies will lie in state at Sacred Heart Catholic Church after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday.  A parish rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary and Fourth Degree Chalice Ceremony at 6:30 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church.  Burial will follow in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Meriden with military honors provided by Bicentennial Post # 225 of the American Legion.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church and sent in care of the Brennan-Mathena Funeral, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, 66603.
