Arlene Haney Brummel (nee Cleavenger)
Arlene was born on September 12, 1917 in Hanover, KS to Jake and Mayme Cleavenger. She had an older brother, Lowell now deceased and a younger sister, Dorothy. She graduated from Marysville High School in 1935, then went to work in Topeka. She married Edward Haney on May 3, 1941 in Corpus Christi, Texas. They moved back to Topeka when Ed was drafted and after the war raised their two sons. Ed died in 1960.
Arlene worked in Topeka for the Kansas State Democratic Committee for 25 years, during which she received honors for her service and had the chance to meet four presidents. She was very active in Most Pure Heart of Mary parish including a year as president of the Ladies Sodality.
She married Ben Brummel on September 23, 1982 and they resided in Garnett until his death in 1989 after which she returned to Topeka. Arlene battled Alzheimer's disease for the past ten years.
Arlene is survived by her sister Dorothy Saylors of Omaha, her sons Mike Haney of Denver and Pat Haney of Houston, her grandchildren Karen, Marsha, Ted, Nancy and John, and her great grandchildren Eamon, Luca, Benjamin, Owen, Samantha and Stephanie.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Saint Columbia Cemetery in Gardner. Arlene will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A parish rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m.
