Stephen “Steve” Carl Zimmerman quietly, peacefully and on his own terms passed away Friday, April 18, 2008 at Stormont-Vail Medical Center. He was born October 20, 1950 in Douglas, AZ to Carl and Helen Zimmerman. The family moved to Topeka in 1960 from Winslow, AZ with the Santa Fe transfer of his father. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1969. Steve served in the United States Navy from 1970 to 1976 as a Neuropsychiatry Corpsman. He graduated from Kaw Valley Vo-Tech School in Civil Engineering in 1978 then finished his college degree at Washburn University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He married Debora “Deby” Dunn December 23, 1978 in Topeka. He was employed by the Kansas Department of Transportation for 28 years, 20 of those years as a Special Permit Administrator. His passions included golf, camping, boating, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family and friends. Steve was baptized a Roman Catholic; he attended Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #534 and the James W. Gibbons Assembly of the 4th degree. He was a Certified Public Manager as well as an approved State of Kansas Mediator for Parent/Adolescent and Victim/Offender programs. He was also proud of his volunteerism to the Seaman School District, United Way, Project Topeka, and the Boy Scouts. Steve was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Vernon Dunn. Survivors include: His wife Deby, and their sons; Shaun and Cody of the home. His sister, Jeanne Johnson of Scranton; niece, Jennifer Traphagan; great-nieces Josie, Madyson and Brooklyn; nephew, Carl Johnson and great-nephew, Jacob. Mother-in-law, Claudine Dunn, Brother-in-law and sister-in-law David and Shari Dunn all of Topeka, as well as a host of greatly loved uncles, aunts and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a parish rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Steve’s funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Navy.
