Joseph E. McCoy

March 20, 1919 — March 27, 2008

Joseph E. McCoy, 89, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2008 in the Emergency Room of Colmery O’Neil VA Medical Center where he was a resident of the Nursing Home Care Unit the past eight years.

 

He was born March 20, 1919 in St. Marys one of twelve children to Joseph and Jennie Bruenin McCoy.  Joseph was a graduate of St. Marys High School and served in the United States Army during WW II.  He was a POW in Germany.

 

Joseph was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for thirty-three years before he retired.  One of Joe’s favorite hobbies was gardening, sharing with family and friends.

 

He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #534 and a charter and life time member of the Disabled American Veterans.

 

Joseph was married to Margaret Colvin on October 10, 1942 in Salinas, CA.  She preceded him in death on January 11, 2004.  Mr. McCoy was preceded in death by an infant son Robert R. McCoy and a daughter Maureen Shrimplin

 

Survivors include; three sons, Joe McCoy of Platte City, MO, Pat McCoy of Southlake, TX and Tim McCoy of Topeka, three daughters, Marilyn Taliaferro of Topeka, Janet Zweifel of Littleton, CO, Mary Warner of Topeka, one brother William McCoy of Topeka and two sisters Margaret Montgomery of Plattsmouth, NE and Sophia Payson of Brooksville, FL.  Fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Mater Dei’s Holy Name Church.  Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW.  Mr. McCoy will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  A parish rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Stroke Association and sent in care of the funeral home.
