Leona Montgomery

July 27, 1939 — March 2, 2008

Leona Montgomery, 68, of Topeka, passed away Sunday March 2, 2008 at Midland Hospice surrounded by her family. She was born July 27, 1939 in Topeka, the daughter of Joseph and Amelia Wasinger Schiefelbein.  Leona attended St. Joseph grade school and graduated from Hayden High School in 1957. Leona was employed as a Supervisor for data entry for the Kansas Department of Agricultural before she retired in 1993. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Altar Society at the church, Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle #503, Ladies of the Moose Lodge #555 and the auxiliary of the National Association of Letter Carriers and the American Postal Workers Union.  Leona will be remembered for her devotion to her faith and the time she spent in prayer for her children, grandchildren and family members.  She enjoyed crochet and made many items to be sold at the church bazaars. Leona was married to Glen Montgomery on May 17, 1958 in Topeka.  He survives. Other survivors include; one son G. Douglas Montgomery of Colorado Springs, CO, a daughter Linda Sloan and husband Brad of Topeka, and ten grandchildren:  Jimmy, Glen III, Victoria, Paul, Natalie, Mack, Peyton, Sydney, Ciara, Maia,  also survive. A daughter Cynthia Parre predeceased Leona on December 24, 1998.  She is also survived by a brother George Schiefelbein of Topeka and three sisters, Ann Sale and husband Jim, Helen Pfeiffer and husband Walter and Irene Gardner and husband Marvin, all of Topeka.  Leona was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Joe, Sylvester and Eugene “Butch” and two sisters, Mary and Amelia. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.  Leona will lie in state after 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the church where the following rosaries will be prayed, Altar Society at 4:30 p.m., Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle at 5:00 p.m. and the parish at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care, Inc. or Sacred Heart Church and sent in care of the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th, 66603. Online condolences to www.brennanmathenafh.com.
