James W. “Jim” Fairbanks, 81, of Topeka, died January 20, 2008 at the Colmery-O’Neil V.A. Medical Center. He was born in Topeka, Kansas on December 29, 1926 the son of Arthur and Viola (Frey) Fairbanks. Jim served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Upon his return he joined the Topeka Fire Dept. where he retired as District chief after 28 years of service. He then was Chief of Topeka-Tecumseh Fire Dept. for five years. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council # 534, and the American Legion Post # 58. Jim married Rita Fiegener at the Church of the Assumption in Topeka, Kansas on October 18, 1950. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Thomas (Linda) Fairbanks of Wichita; and two daughters Kathleen (Richard) Forester and Roxanne (Ed) Yewell all of Topeka, and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas and an infant daughter. Jim will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Wednesday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Christ the King Catholic Church on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. with honors by the Fire Department. Private inurnment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
