John L. Peavler

June 15, 1920 — January 12, 2008

John L. Peavler, 87, of Silver Lake, died January 12, 2008 at his home. He was born in Eram, Oklahoma on June 15, 1920 the son of John W. and Alice (Blake) Peavler. John served in the U.S. Army during World War II.  After returning from the service he lived in Wamego and worked as a welder at Balderson’s Inc. until 1953.  From 1953 to 1960 he and his family moved to Topeka and he worked as a heavy equipment operator for Hankamer’s Asphalt Company.  After 1960, John worked until his retirement as an electrical mechanic for Salisbury’s and later Knox Supply.  He retired in 1985 but continued to work part time until the age of 84. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville, American Legion Post #260 at St. George, the Silver Lake Senior Citizen’s Center and a former member of the Hoisting Engineer’s Local Union. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, watching or listening to Royal’s games and especially watching his grandkids play ball. He married Philomena L. Tauer on January 13, 1944.  She survives of the home.  He is also survived by four daughters; Cheryl Workman (Frank) of Silver Lake, Barbara Rakestraw (Kenneth) of Silver Lake, Carol Abbott (Herb) of Topeka, and Cathy Allen of Topeka; seven grandchildren, David and Gary Workman, Stacy Graves, Mark and Jayme Myers, Jayde and Brooke Allen, ten great grandchildren, and two great great granddaughters.  He is also survived by a sister, Esther Davis of Henrietta, Oklahoma.  He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters. Mr. Peavler will lie in state at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will greet friends and relatives from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a Parish Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.  Graveside services with military honors will be held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery in Wamego at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.   Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church Building Fund and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas  66603.  Online condolences to www.brennanmathenafh.com.
