Samuel Orozco’s long courageous battle with cancer ended on December 6, 2007 at his home surrounded by his family. He was a resident of Topeka, Kansas. He was born on May 13, 1934 in Cherryvale, Kansas the son of Ted and Dolores Gonzales Orozco. Sam was a graduate of Chanute High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1960 from Pittsburg State University. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1954 and served in the 82nd Airborne Division. Mr. Orozco worked for the State of Kansas for 35 years, retiring in 1997 as Chief of Benefits for the Department of Human Resources. He was a member of Mater Dei’s Assumption Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council, Hayden High School Board, lifetime member of Knights of Columbus and James W. Gibbons Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, American Legion Capitol Post #1, Philip Billard Post #1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a board member of the Employment Security Employees Credit Union. Sam enjoyed coaching youth baseball and softball teams, fishing, snow skiing, and traveling. He married Genevieve Esparza on August 14, 1954 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. She survives. He is also survived by two sons and their spouses, Terry and Carolyn Orozco, Mark and Karla Clem Orozco of Topeka and a daughter Lisa Orozco of Frisco, Texas; three grandsons and their spouses, Dan and Danielle Orozco, Matt and Rebecca Orozco, and Nick Orozco all in Topeka and one great grandson, Aaron Orozco; three sisters and their spouses, Mary Mendoza of Derby, Kansas, Margie and Stan Waller of Lawrence, and Jodie and Bob McEntee of Kansas City, Mo. and numerous nieces and nephews. Sam was preceded in death by his parents and a brother John Orozco. Mr. Orozco will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Sunday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary and Chalice Ceremony at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Mater Dei’s Assumption Catholic Church. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
