Jorge Puentes Cortez age 80 of Topeka, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2007 at St. Francis Medical Center. He was born in Houston, Texas on February 22, 1927 the son of Matias and Elvira (Cadena) Cortez. Jorge was a retired Staff Sergeant from the United States Air Force having served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After his retirement from the Air Force Strategic Air Command he worked for Rinehart Roofing and later for Guilfoyle Roofing. He was a member of the Retired Sergeants Association and the Roofers Union. He enjoyed mechanics, electronics, and photography. He was a graduate of the Vo-Tech in small engine repair. He was a history buff and especially enjoyed researching the history of his family. Jorge and Ramona Munoz were married on November 30, 1945. He is survived by: two sons, Jesse M. Cortez and Ricardo M. Cortez both of Topeka, three daughters, Maria M. Cortez of Missouri, Gloria Cortez of Topeka, and Monica Cortez Kirby of Topeka, fifteen grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Mr. Cortez will lie in state at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Sunday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. and a rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors by McConnell Air Force Base. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jorge P.
