Jack Gaylord Hewitt, 84, of Topeka, passed away November 20, 2007 at Hospice House in Kansas City, MO.
Jack was a machinist at Southwick Automotive for many years before he retired.
He was born January 29, 1923 in Topeka, the son of Arville Jasper and Rose Belle Chandler Hewitt. After attending Seaman High School, Jack served in the United States Navy during WW II. He was part of the crew of the USS New Orleans serving in the Pacific.
Jack was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Perpetual Adoration Society, Knights of Columbus Council #2608, James W. Gibbons Assembly of the Fourth Degree where he served as Grand Knight from 1959 – 1961, Moose Lodge #555 and North Topeka Post #400 of the American Legion.
He was married to Rosella Dechand on October 1, 1946 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on March 11, 2000.
Survivors include: three sons, John Hewitt of Shawnee, Jerry Hewitt and wife Becky of Arkansas City and James Hewitt of Olathe; two daughters, Dr. Janette Hewitt of Millersville, PA and Judy Hewitt of Shawnee; seven grandchildren, Stephen, Daniel, Kelly, Laura, Mitchell and Timothy Hewitt and Kenzie Cordt, and one brother, Kendall Hewitt and wife Karen of Sabetha.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary with military honors provided by an honors team from the United States Navy. Jack will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a parish rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary and Fourth Degree Chalice Ceremony at 7:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Kansas City Hospice House and sent in care of the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 West Sixth St., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
