Margaret Letitia Sovern, 85, beloved wife, mother and friend, passed away Thursday, November 1st at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka, Kansas following a short illness.
She was born February 27, 1922 in Fort Madison, Iowa the daughter of Lloyd F. and Helen I. (Stenger) Kent.
On August 7, 1942 she married Russell L. Sovern in Fort Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a daughter Deanna S. Sovern on January 26, 1997.
Margaret was retired from the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services for the State of Kansas. She previously was employed by J. C. Penney Company in Fort Madison and later in Topeka.
Margaret was a member of Mater Dei’s Assumption Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Women’s Auxiliary to the Military Order of the Cooties, the Women’s Auxiliary of Philip Billard Post #1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Topeka and had served as past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hartman-Dawson Post #1805 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Fort Madison.
Survivors include: two daughters, Karen A. (Joe) Heinrich of Fort Madison, Iowa and Teresa M. (Mark) Deckenbach of Topeka, Ks., two sons, Kent L. (Phyllis Mumford) Sovern of Des Moines, Iowa and Daniel J. (Cheri) Sovern of Soldier, Kansas, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Margaret was cremated. A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a Parish Prayer Service will begin at 4:00 p.m. Inurnment will be held privately at Mt. Hope Cemetery Mausoleum.
