Toribio Granado

April 16, 1912 — October 7, 2007

Toribio “Toby” Corona Granada, 95, Topeka, died October 7, 2007, at Plaza West Regional Health Center in Topeka.  He was born April 16, 1912 in Topeka, to Silvester Alvarez and Juana Corona Granado.  He was a lifelong resident of the Topeka area.  He attended Branner Elementary School.  He participated in the first Mexican Fiesta as a dancer in 1933.  He worked 15 years at the John Morrell Packing House.  Mr. Granado was a carman at the Atchison Topeka Santa Fe Railroad shops for 33 years before retiring on July 31, 1974.  He was a veteran in the U.S. Army during WW II.  He served in both the Northern African and Italy campaigns while serving as a medical aidman.  He received a Purple Heart medal after being shot in Northern Italy on Friday, September 13, 1944.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW Philip Billard Post #1650, Missouri American Legion Post #609 Serron Chapter, Nate Morales Chapter #ll777 of the Knights of Columbus, James W. Gibbons Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, American GI Forum of Kansas and a member of the Goodyear Gun Club.  He enjoyed hunting with his favorite dog, Ben.  He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.  He married Felipa Del Hierro on December 19, 1939 in Topeka.  She survives.  Other survivors include a daughter Ann DeSantiago (Juan) of Topeka; two sons Edward Granado (Veronica) of Hutchinson and Anthony Granado (Kandice) of Topeka, his grandchildren:  Priscilla Diaz (Frank), Friedrich “Freddy” Maisberger III (Shawn), Elizabeth Clark (Brad) all of Topeka; Melissa Granado, Patrick Granado, Edward Granado Jr., Gabriel Granado, Juliana Granado and Robert Granado all of Emporia; and 12 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by 3 sisters; Severa Marmolejo, San-Juana Granado, and Ramona Zabala, and 3 brothers Refugio Granado, Antonio Granado and Julian Granado.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 12, 2007 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.  Burial with military honors will be conducted by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW at Mount Calvary Cemetery.  Mr. Granado will lie in state after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church with a parish wake service and Knights of Columbus Chalice Ceremony and Rosary at 7:00 p.m. and a vigil at 7:30 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Toribio C. Granado Memorial Fund at Core First Bank and Trust and my be left at any of their locations.  Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
