Fidel A. “Dale” Rangel, 89, of Topeka, passed away at his home Monday, October 1, 2007.Mr. Rangel was employed by the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific Railroads as a carman in the car repair shop before he retired in 1975.He was born April 24, 1918 in Topeka, the son of Tiburcio and Eulojia Araiza Rangel. Dale was inducted in the United States Army on October 13, 1941 at Fort Leavenworth. A private first class he trained in Fort Bragg, North Carolina before going to Pearl Harbor. Dale spent three and one-half years in the South Pacific before he was released on August 6, 1945. He trained in Oahu, Hawaii with anti-aircraft artillery automatic weapons crew man. Dale also fought in Guam.He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council # 11777 at Our Lady of Guadalupe, Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW, and Post # 400 of the American Legion.Dale’s interests included a collection of railroad engines and cars and he enjoyed traveling.He was married to Rachel Ortiz on April 6, 1946 in Topeka. She survives.Dale was preceded in death by his parents; Tiburcio and Eulojia Rangel, brothers, John and Jose Rangel.Survivors besides his wife include; one son, Joseph Rangel, Jr. and his wife Lola of Topeka; grandchildren, Joey Rangel III and Patrick Rangel; great grandchildren, Stefan, Jaret & Gabrielle; brothers; Edward Rangel and his wife Jane, Ray Rangel and late wife Ruby, Felipe Rangel and his wife Mary, Tiburcio “Butch” Rangel Jr. and his wife Jackie; sisters, Aurora “Vita” Jaramillo and her husband Guadalupe and Carmen “Chita” Perez and her husband Rudy. Many nieces and nephews also survive.Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 201 NE Lake. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary cemetery with military honors provided by Post # 400 of the American Legion. Mr. Rangel will lie in state at Our Lady of Guadalupe from 3 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m.Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and sent in care of the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th, 66603
