Philip Racknor Chappell, 83, of Topeka, died September 27, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital.Mr. Chappell was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 8, 1924 the son of Arch and Ellen (Racknor) Chappell. He was a 1942 graduate of Topeka High School. After graduation he attended Kansas State University before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps. While in the service he served in the European Theater as a B-26 pilot and was in the Battle of the Bulge. After returning from the war he graduated from Washburn University in 1949 with a degree in Business Administration.Philip retired in 1987 from Curtis 100 Inc. where he was a Division Manager. He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister to the home bound and was involved in the Adoration Prayer Group. Philip will be remembered for his love of golf, model airplanes, traveling, helping plan his high school reunions and was an avid World War II History buff. He also enjoyed reading and his family.He married Ann Middleton in Topeka, Kansas on April 15, 1950. They shared 57 years of marriage. She survives of the home. He is also survived by two daughters, Kathleen Mustain of Lenexa, Kansas and Amy Scanlan and her husband John of Jacksonville, Florida and a son David W. Chappell and wife Cathy of Penryn, California; his grandchildren; Shannon Dick, Phillip Chappell and Claire Chappell, three great grandchildren; John Michael Sword, Karina Mitchell and Nicholas Shirley; a brother Warren Chappell and wife Cilly of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a sister Betsy Chappell of Kansas City, Mo., a sister-in-law Joan Schooley of Topeka and a brother-in-law Harry Middleton of Austin, Texas.Mr. Chappell will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. followed by the Parish Rosary recited at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery with military honors.
