Verne M. “Bud” Winter, 84, of Topeka passed away Monday, September 10, 2007 at Plaza West Regional Health Care Center.
Verne was born in Manhattan, Kansas on September 9, 1923 the son of Emanuel A. and Fern B. (Larson) Winter.
He joined the Merchant Marines and served during World War II and retired in 1986 as an officer in the Maritime.
Mr. Winter was a member of the Roman Catholic faith, and will be remembered for his love of flying his own airplane, playing golf and the sea.
He moved to Topeka in 1988 coming from Torrence, California. While in California he married Doris Alm whom he later divorced.
Verne is survived by his brother Ronald Winter and his wife Kathy, a brother-in-law John Nicol and a sister-in-law Lois Winter, all of Topeka and many nieces and nephews.. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Pauline Schmidt, Lorene Christian and Helen Nicol and a brother Robert Winter.
He will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Thursday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
