Evelyn C. Hammes, 90, Topeka, passed away Friday, August 17, 2007 at St. Francis Health Center.
Mrs. Hammes was a nurse’s aide for various nursing homes in Topeka for twenty-five years before she retired. She enjoyed playing bingo and cooking.
She was born December 23, 1916 in Seneca, the daughter of Clement and Anna Strathman Ronnebaum.
Mrs. Hammes was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church.
She was married to Raymond P. Hammes on January 30, 1940 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. He preceded her in death on December 16, 2001.
Survivors include: two sons, Marvin Hammes and his wife Virginia of Verona, WI and Vernon Hammes of Topeka; two daughters, Judith A. McCue and her husband Tony of Topeka and Karen A. Epling of Auburn; one brother; Bill Ronnebaum and his wife Ruth of Seneca and two sisters, Florence Deters of Centralia and Helen Heinen of Seneca. Eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren also survive.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Hammes will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
