John Joseph Haynes passed away peacefully at his home in Topeka, Wednesday morning, April 11, 2007. He was 92. John was born in St. Joseph, Missouri August 30, 1914, the son of John Percival Haynes and Nellie Brown Haynes. He graduated from Capitol Catholic High School in 1932 and worked for Sage Grocery, located in East Topeka, until 1935. He then began his career with the Santa Fe Railway in 1936 and was terminated a year later as a result of the Great Depression. John was re-hired July 1, 1939. On June 3, 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He was stationed with the Persian Gulf Command in Tehran, Iran until his discharge as a Staff Sergeant on October 11, 1945. He resumed his career with the Santa Fe until he retired in 1974. Mr. Haynes was a member of the Mater Dei Parish at Holy Name Church, a life member of Knights of Columbus Council 534, American Legion Capitol Post 1 and the Santa Fe Old Timer’s Club. He was married to Marcella Rose Glotzbach at the Assumption Church on September 17, 1946 and they enjoyed sixty-one years of marriage. In addition to Marcella, living at home, survivors include five children, John J. Haynes and his wife Annette, Pacifica, California; Teresa (Teri) Hare, and her husband Stephen, Topeka; Sr. Eileen Haynes, SCL, Easton, Kansas; Richard Haynes and his wife Sharon, Topeka; and Tony Haynes and his wife Cindy, Tecumseh, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. His sister-in-law, Margaret Haynes, living in California and many nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kelsey Rose Haynes; three brothers, James, George and Robert and a sister, Mary. John Joseph Haynes will be in repose at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday where the family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00. A Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:00 o’clock will be followed by a parish prayer service at 6:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday morning at 11:00o’clock at Holy Name Church. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be provided by an Army detail from Fort Riley.
