Allen Louis McKellips, 55, of Topeka, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 14, 2023, at his home.
He was born in Topeka on March 2, 1968, the son of Roger Allen McKellips and Christeen Ann (Ketter) McKellips. When he was born his parents lived in a home owned by Alf Landon. Shortly after Allen was born, his Father was called to serve in Vietnam. This began Allen’s lifelong dedication to serving Veterans.
Allen was known as ‘Big Al’ to his friends and the very best big ‘Bubba’ to his sister. Big Al had a big laugh, a big story, a big joke, and an enormous appetite for life. His wit was absolutely legendary.
Al graduated from Seaman High School in 1986 and received a technical certificate from Kaw Area Technical College for Diesel Mechanics. One of his first jobs included welding and cement work. There he met Aaron Hilderman who became his lifelong best friend.
Al was the consummate outdoorsman. His hobbies included disc golf, fishing (especially for Crappie), making his own lures, boating, hunting, shooting, and trapping. He was a member of several disc golfing clubs and competitions including the Dawn to Dusk Disc Club and Team ESCO.
Allen was the Facility Maintenance Manager for the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Allen valued the well-being of police officers, their families, and the safety and harmony they strive to uphold.
His father, Roger Allen McKellips preceded him in death in 2020. Allen is survived by his mother, Christeen McKellips of Lawrence; his sister, Claudean McKellips, and her husband David Reber of Lawrence; as well as numerous extended family, and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Monday, August 21, 2023, from 2:30-4:30 pm. Casual attire is encouraged.
Contributions in Big Al’s memory can be sent to Team ESCO, in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave. Topeka, KS 66603.
