Amelia G. “Emily” Serrano, age 86, of Topeka, KS, passed away in the comfort of her home and surrounded by her family on Friday, March 14, 2025, in Topeka.
She was born the daughter of Jose A. and Genevieve (Sanchez) on June 4, 1938, in Joliet, IL. Amelia was a 1956 graduate from Topeka High School.
On September 20, 1959, Amelia married Philip C. Serrano at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Together, they shared 65 years of marriage.
Amelia was a longtime active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She loved volunteering at the Library, Let’s Help and with church activities. In her spare time, Amelia enjoyed gardening, baking and nature, especially bird watching.
She worked as a assistant librarian at East Topeka Junior High school and then as a teller for Topeka State Bank.
Survivors include her husband, Philip; two sons, David M. Serrano of Topeka, Gabriel M. Serrano (Karen J. Rupp-Serrano) of Augusta, Kansas; one daughter, Elizabeth I. Serrano of Lawrence; two brothers, Joseph Gonzales (Virginia) of Topeka, Richard Gonzales (Yolanda) of Corpus Christi, Texas; two sisters, Anita Trujillo and Sara Cobos both of Topeka. Amelia is also survived by one grandchild, Augustine C. Serrano.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Grace Ann Serrano; and son, James “Big Jim” A. Serrano.
A rosary will be prayed at 5:00pm, and Amelia will lie in state from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, Thursday, March 20, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M., on Friday, March 21, at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.
Memorial contributions can be made in Amelia’s memory to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Helping Hands Humane Society, and Phoenix Home Care & Hospice. Contributions can be sent in care of the funeral home.
