Betty Marie Walters

Betty Marie Walters, 94, of Nixa, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at her home. 

She was born on April 18, 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Emil Schmich and Minnie (Math) Schmich. Betty graduated from Hadley Technical High School in St. Louis. After which, she worked at Pevely Dairy as their accounting clerk. 

Betty married Alfred Stahl on June 28, 1953, in St. Louis, Missouri. He died on February 5, 1967. On November 16, 1968, she married Francis Walters, in Herculaneum, Missouri. He died on December 23, 2012. 

Betty was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Halstead, KS, and St. Matthew Catholic Church in Topeka. Betty was passionate about quilting, sewing, cross-stitch, and crocheting. She was also an avid reader and decorated beautiful custom cakes. Betty’s family and friends were always the recipients of her many talents. Betty was also known for her love of flowers and bird watching, especially cardinals and hummingbirds. 

Betty operated the Coffee Shop in the Shawnee County Courthouse and the Coffee Shop in the Halstead Hospital in Halstead, Kansas, with her husband, Frank. 

Survivors include daughters Sheila Goodman of Nixa, Missouri, Brenda Dunning and husband Steve of Hutchinson, Kansas; five grandchildren: Emily Christopher (James) of Nixa, MO, Jenny Sowell of Republic, MO, Hailey Dunning of Ann Arbor, MI, Lauren Munro (Tommy) of Kansas City, MO, and Grant Dunning of Denver, CO. She also had five great-grandchildren: Ethan Christopher, Addison Christopher, Bennett Walch all of Nixa, MO, and Kole Macomber and Kaitlyn Hoffman both of Republic, MO. 

Betty was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, son Larry, and her older brothers Harold, Paul, and Raymond Schmich. 

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Halstead, Kansas. Inurnment will follow at Halstead Cemetery.
