Bonnie L. Claassen, 78, of Topeka, KS died January 25, 2022, at The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus.
She was born March 28, 1943, in McPherson, KS the daughter of John and Martha (Krehbiel) Toews.
Bonnie attended Moundridge Rural High School and graduated from the Halstead Hospital School of Nursing. Her career consisted of working at St. Francis Hospital, Menninger’s and Kansas Foundation for Medical Care. Bonnie was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church where she was active in Bible Study. She enjoyed flower gardening, sending out greeting cards, rooting on the KU Jayhawks, the KC Royals and the KC Chiefs. In her younger years she enjoyed boating and water skiing. Her most favorite past time was simply spending time with friends and family.
She married Charles “Chuck” E. Claassen on January 6, 1964, in Moundridge, KS. He preceded her in death on August 6, 2016. Survivors include two sons, Michael (Jackie) Claassen of Dover, KS, Jeffrey (Vicki) Claassen of Berryton, KS, three grandsons, Mason Claassen, Max Claassen and Matthew Claassen. Other survivors include two brothers-in-law’s, Harold Claassen, and William Kemph, three sister-in-law's, Clara Kerekes, Dorothy Toews and Janet Smith. Several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Martha Toews, four siblings, Hattie Smith, John Toews, Sharon Kemph and George Toews.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 29th and Michigan, where funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at West Zion Mennonite Cemetery, Moundridge, KS.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Bonnies’ memory to Highland Park United Methodist Church sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66603.
