Cynthia Pilar Gonzalez

Overland Park

Cynthia Pilar Gonzalez, 83, of Overland Park, KS and formerly of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at Glenwood Village of Overland Park.

She was born July 16, 1941, in Topeka, to John J. Garcia and Lucia (Torrez) Garcia, and was raised by her aunt, Nellie Lopez, and uncle, Julian Lopez. Cynthia graduated from Highland Park High School in 1960 and attended Clark’s School of Business.

Cynthia worked as a secretary and later as a tariff officer for Sprint, retiring in 2003.

She married Jose (Joe) Antonio Gonzalez on October 17, 1964, at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Topeka. Together they celebrated 59 years together, before his death earlier this year.

Cynthia was a former member of St. Matthew and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and a long-time member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Overland Park, KS. She put her heart and soul into her family and enjoyed taking care of her children and grandchildren. She and Joe were very involved in their children’s education and extracurricular activities. Those included Girl Scouts and many different support roles at Shawnee Mission West High School, where they were presented a Kansas PTA Honorary Lifetime Membership. She always loved to attend her grandchildren’s school and sports activities. She was also a proud KU mom and grandma. Cynthia will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her son, Jose Antonio Gonzalez Jr, (Christie Parker) of Durham, NC; daughter, Lucy Leonor Flynn (John Flynn) of Lawrence, KS; and daughter, Sarah Dolores Gonzalez (Katelyn DePenning) of Merriam, KS. Other survivors include her loving grandchildren, Jack Flynn, Kate Flynn, Natalie Gonzalez, Matthew Flynn, Molly Flynn, Saul Gonzalez, Carmen DePenning-Gonzalez, Cora DePenning-Gonzalez, Joseph DePenning-Gonzalez. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Cynthia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; and beloved aunt Nellie and uncle Julian.

She will lie in state on Thursday, November 7, 2024, from 5-7:00 P.M., with a rosary at 7:00 P.M., at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, Topeka, KS.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Friday, November 8, 2024, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Topeka, KS. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka. Lunch following burial at Marlo Cuevas-Balandran Activity Center, next to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Memorial contributions can be made in Cynthia’s memory to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
