David Barron Martinez, 89, of Topeka, died September 9, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born in Winfield, Kansas on December 12, 1929 the son of Jesse Martinez and Margarita Barron Martinez, and step father, Toribio Tapia
David served in the United States Army from 1950-1953, where he was honorably discharged. He then went to work as a Plumber Apprentice for several local plumbing companies in Topeka.
He enjoyed Mexican music and dancing, and watching sports, westerns and wrestling. His family will always remember his amazing homemade tamales, surprise Prize Package lunches, and the endless love for his grandchildren. David was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the GI Form in Topeka.
David married Dolores Gonzales on May 20, 1955. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his children, Steven Martinez of Winfield, KS, Joe (Lorie) Martinez of Topeka, Mercedes Morgan of Topeka, and Manuel (Sara) Martinez of Topeka. He is also survived by four sisters, Berniece Tapia of Winfield, Lupe Underklosseo of Winfield, Mary (Larry) Chavez of Philadelphia, Elisha (Joe) Delozier of Winfield, six brothers, Johnny Tapia of Winfield, Tony (Lupe) Tapia of Winfield, Alfred Tapia of Winfield, Robert (Francis) Barron of Florida, Jimmy Tapia of Winfield, Edward Tapia of Winfield; sixteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by both of his parents and step-father; Five siblings, Virginia Tapia, Mary Alice, Susie Vargas, Joseph Tapia and Ralph Tapia.
Visitation will take place at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Monday, September 16 from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Rosary will be prayed at 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will start at 11:00 a.m. Burial at Leavenworth National Cemetery will follow at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and sent in the care Brennan Mathena Funeral Home. 800 SW 6th Ave, Topeka, Kansas 66603.
