Gloria Helen Byers, 93, of Topeka, died November 16, 2018 at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
She was born in Galveston, Texas on June 13, 1925 the daughter of Arthur and Helen (Koehler) Weaver. She went to Holy Name School and was a 1943 graduate of Capitol Catholic High School.
Gloria worked as a Secretary in Forms Control for Security Benefit Life until her retirement. She was also a military wife for 24 years while her husband served in the U.S. Air Force.
She was a member of Mater Dei Holy Name Parish where she had been a member of the Guild and worked as a volunteer in the office.
Gloria enjoyed dancing, traveling, and doing crossword puzzles.
She married Frederick William Byers Jr. at Assumption Church on January 10, 1945. He preceded her in death in 1988 as well as her parents, her brother John Weaver, sister-in-law Mary Helen Weaver, and her son-in-law James Spiker.
Gloria is survived by her children; Michele Byers of Topeka, Kevin (Patty) Byers of Topeka, Michael Byers of Leavenworth, John (Patty) Byers of Topeka, Frederick Byers III of Los Angeles, CA., Cindy Spiker (Kent Monday) of Ottawa, and Sandra Byers of Topeka and a brother Don (Norma) Weaver of Topeka, and sister-in-law Mary Ann Weaver of Topeka. Her grandchildren are Jamie and James Spiker, Travis, Aaron and Wade Byers, Thomas, Kyle and Trent Byers, and Tanner and Bailey Byers. She also has five great grandchildren, Ameilyah, Brooklynn, Julianna, Lyric, and Henry with twin granddaughters on the way.
Gloria will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Friday after 2:00 p.m. where a Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Mater Dei Holy Name Parish. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
