Gregory Kent Waetzig, age 63, of Topeka, KS, passed away on Friday, August 20, 2021, at Stormont-Vail Hospital. He was born the son of the late Francis W. and Dorothy M. (Miller) Waetzig on October 8, 1957, in Topeka, KS.
Greg attended Holy Name Grade School and graduated from Topeka High School in 1976 where he had a passion for assisting the football and basketball teams as a manager. Greg was also a member of Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church and a Knight of Columbus Honorary Chapter member.
Greg worked as a custodian at Hallmark Cards and was direct care staff at Sheltered Living. In the early years, he enjoyed collecting baseball cards, going to stock car races and wrestling matches, and raising his Boston terrier. He had life-long interests in cheering on the Jayhawks, completing 1,000-word jigsaw puzzles, feeding the birds, and cooking, especially BBQ. He had life-long loves for the family farm and for his Chevy truck.
Survivors include brother, Dennis F. Waetzig and his wife Marlene of Chesterfield, MO; sister, Connie K. Holmes and her husband Bruce of Williamsburg, VA; four nephews, Chad Waetzig and his wife Liz, Todd Waetzig and his partner Sarah Chaffee, Bryan Holmes and his partner Julie Leaf, Matthew Holmes; and three great-nieces, Julia Waetzig, Grace Williams, and Erin Williams.
Memorial visitation will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M., followed by a memorial service at 10:30 A.M., at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. Burial of cremains will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Topeka High Athletics Football or Basketball Programs. They can be left with or mailed to the funeral home.
The family offers loving thanks to Greg’s cousin, Frances Boudreau, for her many acts of kindness and support; to Greg’s best friend, Mark Harvey, for being with him at his passing; and to Kimberly Wells, social worker at The Gardens of Aldersgate, for being Greg’s advocate and friend.
