Topeka

James “Jim” Edward Gossett, age 88, of Topeka, KS, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at KU-St. Francis Campus.

He was born the son of Arthur “Jack” and Thelma (Byrom) Gossett in rural Hall County, Texas. After high school, Jim served his country with pride during the Korean War in the United States Navy and the United States Army.

Upon returning from the service, Jim’s knowledge from his father and from his military service helped him start his long career in the automotive parts industry. He worked many years for Big A Auto Parts as a salesman and during his career, he was an owner and operator of Big A Auto Parts in Mankato, KS. He loved to work on older cars and cherished fast cars. Aside from his automotive expertise, Jim was considered an all-around handyman. After marrying Sybil Marie Allen on August 28, 1982, in Kansas City, KS, Jim enjoyed remodeling the various homes he and Sybil bought. Jim enjoyed traveling with Sybil with his fifth-wheel camper and spending time at the lake. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan, and you could find him watching MotorTrend on tv. In his down time, Jim loved to read and spend time with Sybil. Never one to sit idle, after retirement from the automotive parts industry, he drove a school bus which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was a hardworking, crafty man that will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of almost 42 years, Sybil M. Gossett; son, Elliott Teters and his wife Susan; daughter-in-law, Holly Schram; three daughters, Vickie Pointelin, Dedra Rogers, and Becky Gossett. Other survivors include his ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; as well as two brothers and two sisters.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Diane Worm; and a son, Gary Teters.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held by the family at a later date.
