Josephine K. Eakes-Smith, 98, passed away in Gower, Missouri on August 26, 2019.
She was born in Garden City, Kansas on July 24, 1921 the daughter of John Peter and Marie (Schaefer) Eakes.
Josephine was a Clerk Typist for the Government and a Teletype Operator for Santa Fe Railroad prior to her retirement.
She married Lester Smith (who retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company) in San Francisco on November 29, 1947. They were married 35 years.
Josephine is survived by her two sons, Robert L. Smith of Kansas City, Missouri and Charles D. Smith of St. Joseph, Missouri; Brother, Joe Eakes of Topeka; and one grandson, Matthew Luttrell as well as a host of extended family.
She was preceded in death by a son, Glenn E. Smith, a brother, George Eakes, Casper Eakes, and John Eakes, and sisters, Rose Ann McRoberts, Marcella Westwood, Regina Bultez, Mary Calvino, Sister Mildred Marie Eakes, Ann Bencken, Joanne Deghand, Helen Eakes, and Catherine Eakes.
Josephine will lie in state on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, from 6-8 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Brennan Mathena Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
