Mary L. Escalante

Mary L. Escalante, age 80, of Silver Lake, KS, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Stormont Vail Hospital.

She was born the daughter of the late Raymond and Virginia (Munoz) Ortega on August 15, 1942, in Topeka, KS.

Mary married Guadalupe “Lupe” J. Escalante, Sr., on February 13, 1961, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Together, they shared 61 years of marriage.

She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and was an active parishioner involved in many clubs and memberships. Those include the Altar Society, Crusillo, Augustinian Recollect. Mary helped throughout the years with Fiesta Mexicana and funeral luncheons. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and being together for family gatherings.

Survivors include her husband, Guadalupe “Lupe” J. Escalante, Sr.; daughter, Juanita Bradley (Ivan); three sons, Lupe Joe Escalante, Jr., Michael A. Griggy-Escalante (Mark), and Patrick Escalante (Veronique); 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include her two brothers, Raymond “Sonny” Ortega (Rebecca), and Rick Hernandez (Tina); three sisters, Rose Vega (Moises), Virginia Martinez (Joe), and Patricia Adame (Norbert).

She will lie in state at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, from 5:00-8:00 P.M., with a rosary at 5:30 P.M.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M., on Thursday, November 10, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.

Memorial contributions can be made in Mary's memory to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
