Maximo “Max” Mendoza, age 81, of Topeka, KS, passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, February 4, 2021 in Topeka.
Max was born the son of Juan and Petra (Sanchez) Mendoza on November 27, 1939 in Topeka, KS.
On December 2, 1961, Max married Connie Ramirez at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lawrence, KS. Together, they shared 59 years of marriage.
Max was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and a former member of the Cursillo. He enjoyed doing creative things with his hands and was fond of model trains. In his early years Max played the bongos for local bands. He loved various music, especially Tex-Mex and Doo-Wop. He was featured in the Topeka Capital Journal’s Entertainment Arts section in 1982 for his special talent of creating unique piñatas. Max retired after being employed as a Dental Technician for Heumann Dental Lab for forty-five years beginning in 1956 to 2001.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Connie Mendoza; son, Max Mendoza Jr (Stephanie), daughter, Regina Mendoza, son, Mark Mendoza; three granddaughters, Shawna Herwick (Caleb), Melodi Wheeler and Gabrielle Mendoza; one grandson, Andrew “A.J” Vargas; brothers; Peter Mendoza (Nina), John Mendoza (Virginia), Jacinto Mendoza, Marc “Junior” Tavares (Yumi), sisters; Mary Chavez (Manuel-dec.), Rita Hernandez (Ruben-dec.), Ramona Burnett (Cappy), Rebeca Mendoza (Roberto Vargas) as well as a loving extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rosalinda “Rosie” Mendoza.
Max will lie in state at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Monday, February 8, 2021 from 11:00 A.M. until 11:30 A.M., followed by a parish rosary at 11:30 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 P.M. (Noon). Cremation will follow after the services. Inurnment will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Max’s memory to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
