Peter Mendoza, 82, of Carbondale, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at his home.
He was born January 28, 1942, in Topeka, the son of Juan Mendoza and Petra (Sanchez) Mendoza.
Peter grew up in Topeka, graduating from Topeka High School and attended VoTech and Washburn University.
He served honorably in the United States Army from December 1963 to December 1965. Peter worked for Santa Fe as a carman for over 30 years.
Peter loved traveling and taking vacations. He had visited 49 of the 50 states and enjoyed traveling internationally as well. On many of those trips he was able to incorporate his interest of unexplained things like aliens and bigfoot. He also liked hunting, fishing, gardening, and stopping at garage sales, flea markets, and searching for antiques.
He married Nina May Humbert on September 22, 2000, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include stepchildren, Theresa Courtwright (Chris) of Shawnee, Cindy Thompson (Brent Gurwell) of Scranton, Christina Bronson of Carbondale, Louis Padilla of Carbondale; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; siblings, Mary Chavez of Topeka, Rita Hernandez of Topeka, Ramona Burnett (Cappy) of Topeka, Johnny Mendoza (Virginia) of Topeka, Jacinto Mendoza of Topeka, Rebecca Vargas (Roberto) of Ventura, California; and sister-in-law, Connie Mendoza of Topeka.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Rosie L. Mendoza and Max Mendoza; and cousin, Mark Mendoza.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 1, from 5:30pm to 8:00pm, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home with a rosary prayed at 6:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am, Thursday, May 2, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Topeka.
