Phillip “Phil” Muñoz, age 91, of Topeka, KS, passed away at home, surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 5, 2023.
He was born the son of Felipe and Lorenza (Salinas) Muñoz on February 5, 1932, in Topeka, KS.
Phil served his country with pride, in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He continued to serve and retired as a Staff Sgt., from the Kansas Army National Guard.
He was a State Golden Gloves Featherweight Boxing Champion. Phil was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and former member and chairman of America GI Forum. On June 30, 1956, Phil married the love of his life, Mary Louise Valdivia at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Together, they shared 66 years of marriage.
Phil’s working career consisted of 36 years with the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Mary Louis Muñoz; children, Stephanie Muñoz-O’Neil (Steve) of Topeka, KS, Mark Muñoz (Patricia) of Misawaka, IN, Jaime Muñoz (Diane) of Pittsburgh, PA, Yvonne Herrera (Bernard “Bernie” deceased) of Topeka, KS, Gary Muñoz (deceased) and his wife, Josie Muñoz, Adam Muñoz of Fort Collins, CO, Patricia Rivera (Walter) of Topeka, KS, Ann Denise Muñoz-Garcia (Elias) of Topeka, KS, and Cynthia Muñoz-Johnson (Troy) of Lawrence, KS. Other survivors include, 24 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; five siblings, Terry Caballero, Mary Root (deceased), Sam Muñoz, Mickey Muñoz, and Richard Muñoz.
Phil will lie in state after 2:00 P.M., on Thursday, March 9, 2023, with family being present from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. A rosary will take place at 6:00 P.M.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M., on Friday, March 10, 2023, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Phil’s memory to Midland Hospice and/or Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
