Placido Vargas, Jr., 70, of Topeka, KS died Monday, April 26, 2021 at the House at Midland Care.
He was born December 28, 1950 in Aibonito, Puerto Rico the son of Placido Vargas, Sr and Josefa (Ortiz) Vargas.
Placido was retired as an Administrative Assistant from the State of Kansas Department of Revenue. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where he was a member of 3rd Order of Augustinians and Cursillo. He was also a member of the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame.
In Placido’s younger years he coached baseball. He enjoyed watching the KC Chiefs, Royals and the KU Jayhawks. But his greatest enjoyments were playing in the band “Picante” with his son and grandson along with spending time with all his family and grandkids.
He married Susan Marie Lopez on March 17, 1979 in Kansas City. They renewed their vows on November 20, 1993 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Elisa Gallegos and her husband, Alberto, a son, Placido Vargas, III and his wife, Jana all of Topeka; three siblings, Enrique Vargas and his wife, Olga, of Puerto Rico, Manuel Vargas and his wife, Lydia, of Texas and Albert Vargas of Topeka, KS. Eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, Placido and Josefa Vargas and a sister, Minerva Vargas.
Placido will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 2021, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2021, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66603.
