Ramona “Mona” L. Johnson, age 80, of Topeka, passed away in the early morning on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Plaza West Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born the daughter of Vidal and Petra Martinez on October 25, 1941, in Topeka, KS. Mona was born into a large family with 19 other siblings.
Mona was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She was a very proud, hardworking, single mom to three sons. In her spare time, Mona loved to give back by volunteering her time to the church, LULAC and other organizations. Mona was the Kansas LULAC Woman of the year in 2011 and had been a long-time supporter and advocate with the Topeka LULAC Council #11071. She had a creative knack for decorating during the holidays and special occasions.
She is survived by her three beloved sons, Richard Martinez, Clayton Johnson and his wife Joanna, and Ferrell Johnson and his wife Tosha; eleven grandchildren, Vidal, Alyssa, DJ, Esperanza, Vincent, Isaiah, Marcos, Aisha, Brianna, TY, and Ethan; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Michael, Augustine, and Ignacio; as well as five sisters, Rita, Loretta, Mary, Amelia, and Julia.
She is preceded in death by her parents and eleven siblings.
Mona will lie in state on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, from 5-8:00 P.M., with a rosary at 6:30 P.M., at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M., on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Cremation will follow after the services and Mona will be laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be made in Mona's memory to Topeka LULAC Senior Center, 1502 NE Seward Ave., Topeka, KS 66616. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
