Richard Wayne Bassett, passed away suddenly on Monday, April 22, 2019 at the age of 70. He leaves his wife of 46 years, Stella; two sons, Andrew and Steven (Jessica); and two daughters, Erin (Marc) and Sherry. He also leaves behind his beloved granddaughters, Isabelle, Victoria, Samantha, Caroline, Emma, Mazzy and grandson, Oscar. The son of Richard F. and Lorraine (Bent) Bassett, he was born in San Jose, CA and raised as a military child. He was the middle of three children, including his sister Ricki and brother Ronald. Rick spent five years in the service, where he was stationed at Forbes Field in Topeka, KS, and his home for the next 50 years. He and Stella raised their family as devoted members of the Saint Matthew Catholic Church. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #13012. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He dedicated most of his retirement to his grandchildren and volunteering at their school, carpooling for the kids (and their friends) and serving lunches, working in the cafeteria and volunteering at the church food pantry. Rick was playful and loved to tease. His hobbies were focused around his family, sports, and volunteering in the community. Family will receive friends on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at St. Matthew Catholic Church from 5-8:00 P.M., where parish rosary will be prayed at 6:30 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, April 26 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2700 SE Virginia Ave, Topeka, KS 66605. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
