Richard P Flores 87, of Murrieta, California, and proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps passed away on Sunday 03/23/2025. Son of John and Josephine Flores, he grew up in Topeka, Kansas. He was born on February 1, 1938, and graduated from Topeka High School in 1956.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Josephine Flores; his brothers Robert Flores, Raymond Flores, his sister Rose Gallego.
Richard joined the United States Marine Corps on January 30, 1959. In June 1966 Corporal Flores arrived in Republic of Vietnam and was selected to work as an investigator with the III Marine Amphibious Force Criminal Investigation Department in DaNang. His skill and proficiency allowed him to extend an additional 6 months in Vietnam and earn a Certificate of Commendation for a job well done. He returned to the United States in November 1967. Richard enlisted his last tour, as his younger brother Raymond was scheduled to be drafted and report to Vietnam, Richard took his place.
In July 1982 Richard was assigned as 1st Sergeant for C Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. He held this position until his retirement in August 1984.
Richard, is survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, family friends, and VFW members.
He will lie in state on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 5-8:00 P.M., with a rosary being prayed at 6:00 P.M., at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 11:00 A.M., on Thursday, April 3, 2025. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.
