Rudolph S. “Rudy” Gomez, 87, of Topeka, passed away at his home on July 25, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 31, 1935, the son of Alphonso and Luz (Sanchez) Gomez. He served his country in the U.S. Army in Germany and was a member of the 42nd Army Band. Rudy retired in 1999 as a Painter with the Santa Fe Railroad. He loved music especially Mexican music and played the saxophone in the band “The Falcons”, the Santa Fe Band and at the Mexican Fiesta. Along with his love of music he especially loved dancing with his wife. Rudy was a fan of KU Jayhawks, KC Chiefs and the K-State Wildcats. He enjoyed gardening and sharing his surplus of vegetables to neighbors and friends. He loved being a grandpa and spoiling his grandchildren. Rudy married Cecilia Lopez at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on February 3, 1961. She survives. He is also survived by three children, Adrian Gomez, Bernadine Gomez and Alexandra (Rodney) Simecka, five grandchildren, Cheryl (Rene) Garcia, Grace Gomez, Isabelle Gomez, Ellie Gomez, Ari Simecka, and a great grandchild Oliver Rene Garcia. He has three sisters, Ernestine Sandate, Rachel Griego, and Mary (bob) Benaka, and two brothers, Ralph (Carmen) Gomez and William “Bill” (Martha) Gomez. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Catherine Gomez. He will lie in state at Our Lady of Guadalupe on Friday, August 5th where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 a.m. and his family will receive friends from 10-11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Military honors will follow the mass at church. Cremation will follow with private inurnment at a later date.
