Lifelong farmer and agricultural innovator Russell Thomas Winsor, age 74, of Grantville, KS passed away peacefully in his home on June 18, 2021. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 26, 2021, at United Methodist Church in Grantville, KS at 10 a.m. Visitation will be Friday, June 25, 2021, at the church from 6-8 p.m. Final resting will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Newman.
Russell was born September 24, 1946, in Topeka, KS to James R. and Helen A. (Becker) Winsor. Russell attended Grantville Elementary School and graduated from Perry Rural High School in 1964. He went on to attend Kansas State University and graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics in 1969. After graduating college, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1969-1975.
Russell married Patricia J. (Hurd) Winsor at Perry, KS, on February 15, 1970. Unto this union two sons were born: Andrew T. and Benjamin J. Winsor.
Following the legacy of his parents and grandparents, Russell dedicated his life to farming and ranching and continued to expand the crop and livestock operation using innovative and progressive methods. As farming technology changed, he was a forward leader in implementing new practices. He liked to share stories of historical and farming relevance.
Russell and Pat embraced the many changes in agriculture throughout their farming careers and were chosen as Master Farmer and Master Farm Homemaker. They were also honored as Grand Marshal of Jefferson County 4-H parade. Russell served on two water drainage districts and was caretaker for the Rose Hill Cemetery. Russell was supportive of agricultural education. He was a member of several organizations and hosted a number of domestic and international groups to the farm. He was also a supporter of 4-H.
Russell valued hard work, dedication, was always up for a challenge and loved a good deal. Russell was very proud of his sons and honored that they joined him on the farm and worked side-by-side with him. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye and he enjoyed family meals, especially if they included beef and homemade pie.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Pat, and two sons Andy and Ben. Andy and LaVell have two sons, Kade and Brayden. Ben and Emily have two daughters, Collins and Rhowyn. He is also survived by sisters Judy (John) Rodman and Jane Dunnaway and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Russell was proceeded in death by parents Jim and Helen Winsor.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Russell T. Winsor Memorial Fund to be distributed to support cancer care and research. Memorial contributions can be made in his name and directed to Brennan Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW Sixth Ave., Topeka, KS 66603.
