SMSgt(Ret) Richard “Dick” N. McIntyre, age 92, of Topeka, KS, passed away in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
He was born the son of the late Fred A. and Rosa M. (Lager) McIntyre on December 31, 1931, in Guthrie Center, Iowa. Dick graduated from Sigourney High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Norma Jean Gabel on September 17, 1951, in Sigourney, IA. Together, they shared 61 beloved years of marriage. Norma passed away on January 15, 2013.
Dick was a retired military veteran in the United States Air Force. He and his family lived across the country, serving at different military bases in the world. He served almost 24 years with the Air Force as an Avionics Maintenance Superintendent and was honorably discharged with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. For his service during June 14, 1971, through June 10, 1972, Dick was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Thailand during the Vietnam War. He received other commendations and medals for his 24 years in the service. After retiring from the United States Air Force, Dick and Norma settled in Topeka to continue raising their family. Dick then worked for the Topeka VA Hospital, retiring after 20 years in 1996.
In his spare time, Dick enjoyed gardening, yard work, and building model airplanes. He loved to spend time with his family, and he always looked forward to attending family reunions in Colorado and Arkansas. He and Norma were members of St. Matthew Catholic Church.
Survivors include four sons, Rick McIntyre and wife Cindy, Steve McIntyre, Greg McIntyre and his wife Tina, Darrin McIntyre and his wife Brandi; one daughter, Kelly Diehl and her husband Kevin. Other survivors include eight grandchildren, Branden, Alyssa, Taylor, Dylan, Trey, Ryan, Kristopher, Jacob, and eight great-grandchildren, Emily, Ava, Lila, Adam, Zoey, Wyatt, Logan, and Nolan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; two brothers, Jay & Lloyd “Bud” McIntyre; and two sisters, Virginia Willison and Nora Schultz.
Dick will lie in state at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 5-8:00 P.M., with a rosary at 5:00 P.M.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M., on Friday, February 9, 2024, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2700 SE Virginia Ave., Topeka, KS 66605. Burial with Whiteman Air Force Military Honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.
Memorial contributions can be made in Dick’s memory to St. Matthew Catholic Church and/or the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), 2200 SW Gage Blvd, Topeka, KS 66622. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
