Teresa J Obaya

Teresa J. Obaya, 73, of Topeka, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at her home.

She was born October 2, 1948 in Pauline, Kansas, the daughter of Ladio G. and Mary (Juarez) Hernandez.

Mrs. Obaya retired after 32 years as a foil stamp operator for Hallmark Cards in Topeka.  After retirement she opened a Mexican restaurant in north Topeka called Chita’s.  After a couple of years of running Chita’s Teresa went to work at Stormont Vail Hospital in the Environmental Services Department. 

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, whether it was a small gathering or cooking up on of her delicious meals.  She was always someone you could depend on and was willing to help anyone in need.  She attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and was a member of the Altar Society.

She married Juan Obaya on April 15, 1967 in Topeka, Kansas.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Sylvia Obaya of Topeka; grandchildren, Bryarra Tinoco of Topeka, Tyarra Humerickhouse and husband Cameron of Lawrence, Maylee Warren of Topeka, Kendal Saunders of Topeka; siblings, Reuben Hernandez of Topeka, Debbie Maldonado of Topeka, Edward Hernandez of Topeka, and Anna Dulan of Topeka; 15 nieces and nephews; as well as numerous friends that will miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Phillip J. Hernandez.

A rosary will be prayed at 5:30pm Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service at 6:00pm.  The family will receive friends from 7:00pm-8:00pm, at the funeral home.

Inurnment will be private at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
