Thomas Edward Courtney, age 96, of Topeka, KS, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025, in Topeka.
He was born the son of Gerald and Margaret (Connors) Courtney on January 21, 1929, in Topeka, KS. Thomas was a lifelong resident of Topeka and attended both Holy Name Grade School and Hayden High School. He graduated from St. Benedict’s College in 1949.
Thomas was employed as an accountant for Santa Fe from 1949 until his retirement in 1986. He was also a member of the Kansas National Guard for 20 years; one of his first duties for the guard was standing watch during the 1951 flood disaster.
Thomas was a loving and kind man. He took good care of his parents as they aged. He was a generous uncle who influenced interest in politics, practical jokes, and dogs in his nieces and nephews.
Thomas is survived by his sister, Marian Schmidt; two nephews and two nieces.
He will lie in state from 9:30 A.M. until 10:00 A.M., on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Most Pure of Heart of Mary Catholic Church followed by a Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at 10:00 A.M., at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.
